lights would flicker and go out
making rooms seem dark and bitter
Fathers would grumble
and root around
while Mothers would light candles
making a warm sight
Telling us stories til we fell asleep
knowing she was right
that there would always be light
in the morning.

My Magpie
true,
you remind me of those times when I was young, my family used lamp...
it is a great discovery to see that you share this experience.

Very nice memories. Lovely Magpie.
It reminded me olden days..
doomed if I do, doomed if I don't

I still live in the little house my father built. On the day I was born, we moved into the small cottage with no running water and an outhouse that is pictured on the banner of my blog.
To this day, sixty years later, I know where every candle can be found for we still need them often.
Yes, I do remember. Only too well.
If fire had feelings: it would show its affection to the mothers who light them.
Oh, yes and there was! Nice piece!!
Yes, definitely remember...
Well written words.
Yes, as Annie says..."the sun will come up 2morrow." And even if it's not sunshine, there will b daylight.
Beautiful job describing how all mother's should be.
this was timely as we had some outages last night...but we were all snug as bugs as it happened pretty late.
Lovely poem of memories...
Great piece of writing Kath, so full of hope.

Excellent post! Takes me back to a year ago, when there were storms every week it seemed, and the power would always go out for the entire street. Wonderfully written! =)

Those nights are indeed some of the most memorable. Lovely.
Kathe this is truly lovely! A wonderful and beautiful Magpie!
:-)
Mother knows best! I love the way you did this: simple, but very effective. Thank you.
Yes, moms are like light lanterns. I miss mine so. :)
Nice take, Kath.Britain had power cuts in the 70's and the memory still remains with me. I recall my old gran wishing we had "old gas lamps" to see us through. And yes, the light always shines through.
Charming. Like this! :-0
I do remember those occassions both as a child and as the father.
Warm and cozy by the wood stove mainly.
